Bus 11 to Ardrossan Chapelhill via Pennyburn

Stagecoach Western double-decker bus 16862 (N862VHH, Volvo chassis, Alexander body, built in 1995) in service on line 11 Ardrossan Chapelhill via Pennyburn (Scotland). Like many of the older double deckers this bus has yellow the children / schoolbus sign too.
Can anyone explain what this sign actually means? And is it in use with busses that do schoolruns only or is it abused and just stuck on any bus nowadays?
