Seen here is E3, one of London General's first batch of Alexander Dennis Enviro400 double deckers, now a common type with Go-Ahead London and other bus operators. It is seen at the stand at Norwood Junction on route 196, the first day of operation by LG with the new buses.

What is the purpose of the two vertical rails at the front corners?

These are to prevent branches from trees from damaging the windows or bodywork of the top deck of the bus, and can be found on most British double deckers
